How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You). For the first time on one CD all of Tyrone Davis' Billboard R&B chart hits of the 1970s recorded for the Columbia label. Tyrone Davis had been a prolific recording artist and hit maker for many years when he signed to the major CBS Corporation in 1976

Davis released about 25 singles during his seven years with Dakar, most of them big R&B sellers produced by Willie Henderson. He finally returned to the top spot with "Turning Point" in 1975. Soon afterwards, Davis switched to the major Columbia record label and recorded seven albums over the next five years with producer Leo Graham and arranger James Mack who had collaborated with him for "Turning Point". In 1994, Davis went to Bellmark/Life Records for one album. Davis' days as a major chart act were over, but he continued to be a popular live attraction and finally signed in 1996 with Malaco Records, the southern-based blues label recording him on a number of albums. He also performed on a PBS special on 1970s soul music in 2004, singing "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time". How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)".

After being featured prominently on Mann's hit Memphis Underground album and recording three solo albums for Atlantic under Mann's supervision, Ayers left the group in 1970 to form the Roy Ayers Ubiquity, which recorded several albums for Polydor and featured such players as Sonny Fortune, Billy Cobham, Omar Hakim, and Alphonse Mouzon. An R&B-jazz-rock band influenced by electric Miles Davis and the Herbie Hancock Sextet at first, the Ubiquity gradually shed its jazz component in favor of R&B/funk and disco

This 15-track compilation gathers the best of Chicago soul singer Tyrone Davis' Columbia recordings from 1976 to 1981. Cut after Davis made his career defining soul hits for Dakar in the '60s, he scored a few more chart toppers including the upbeat, disco era tracks "Give it Up, Turn it Loose, "This I Swear," and "Get On Up (Disco)  . The Columbia Years 1968-69. But I’m Ready, Willing & Able -or the ninth take of it included here-is the closest we get to evidence that it could really measure up to everybody's reputations, with Betty’s subdued-but-sharp vocals and the tight, nervy guitar/organ interplay driving things home. The other tracks’ more freewheeling feel can provide a certain kick.

Notes

For the first time on one CD all of Tyrone Davis' Billboard R&B chart hits of the 1970s recorded for the Columbia label.
Tyrone Davis had been a prolific recording artist and hit maker for many years when he signed to the major CBS Corporation in 1976. It was not until 1965 that he finally got a break with Jack Daniels of Four Brothers Productions where he released three singles on Four Brothers before he signed to ABC Records but Tyrone became convinced that a song "Can I Change My Mind" was a hit but ABC did not and after some negotiation Davis was able to offer the disc to other labels.

Carl Davis A&R man of Brunswick Records and former A&R head of CBS' Okeh R&B label launched his own label as a subsidiary of Brunswick Records under the name Dakar. He signed Tyrone Davis but was more impressed with the song, "A Woman Needs To Be Loved" than he was with "Can I Change My Mind". The song was duly recut with another doyen of the Chicago soul scene, Willie Henderson and released on 45 with "Can I Change My Mind" relegated to the "B" side. The record did nothing until Davis called a DJ friend in Houston and another in Indiana and asked them to flip the disc, which started a snowball effect as the record was flipped across the country and the disc soared to No. 3 on the US pop charts and three weeks at No. 1 on the R&B chart.
