That was it for the Method Actors: two guys, both with wild styles that grew all the more wild as they grew more tightly coiled. That's pretty much the Method Actors method condensed, and it plays out to deliriously rewarding and consistent effect on a CD that collects songs recorded from 1980 to 1981. Hints of other sounds from before and after drift in- DNA, Polvo, Gang of Four, Captain Beefheart- but the Method Actors sound too wound up in their mania to get distracted by anything from the outside.

This Is Still It distills the abundant 1980-1981 output of Athens, GA’s Method Actors, during this phase guitarist/vocalist Vic Varney (a permanent member) and drummer/vocalist David Gamble (who was out by the end of 1982). Sonic contemporaries of fellow Athenians Pylon, who were managed for a stretch by Varney, and to a slightly lesser extent the B-52's, the band was nonetheless unique for having two members and creating such a vigorous, romping, oddball attack between the instruments and voices that basslines were not missed
The Method Actors, on the other hand, are ones of those bands who always find a place at the end of comprehensive lists, . REM emerged from the Athens, Georgia scene which also included (several bands) and The Method Actors". In short, fame did not await them. But you can't help feeling that the sounds made by The Method Actors are perhaps a little surplus and inessential to 21st century ears. It's not just that this stuff has been relentlessly plundered by every musically literate band over the last decade, although that's a big part of it. Certainly, it's not hard to find plenty of music being made right now which sounds just like songs The Method Actors wrote 30-odd years ago.
