An album of their recordings, James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine was released in 1971 and reached on the U. S. pop charts. Taylor released his second studio album Sweet Baby James on Warner Bros. which both certified platinum in the United States and produced Top 40 singles. Nearly four years later, Taylor's next studio album That's Why I'm Here was released and spawned a cover of Buddy Holly's "Everyday", which only became a minor hit in the United States. This was followed by Never Die Young three years later and then by New Moon Shine in 1991, both of which sold over one million copies.

From 'That's Why I'm Here' (1986). Forget that national-anthem mishap. Taylor is an old pro at turning cover songs into radio hits - from the 1971 No. 1 'You've Got a Friend' (written by Carole King) and 1975's '(How Sweet It Is) To Be Loved by You' (Marvin Gaye) to 1979's 'Up on the Roof' (also written by King with her then-husband Gerry Goffin). From 'James Taylor Live' (1993)  . A portion of the road that runs along Morgan Creek, also referenced here, was renamed the James Taylor Bridge in 2003. 2. 'Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight'.

The fact that Taylor actually improved in the role of MOR crooner is the saving grace of his recording career. Mud Slide Slim cemented Taylor's superstar status. But the hit reading of Carole King's "You've Got a Friend" drops some strong hints about the inherent flaccidity of this mellow troubadour approach that the rest of the album doesn't heed (save for "Long Ago and Far Away," with Joni Mitchell's backing vocals). Late-Eighties albums That's Why I'm Here and Never Die Young offer little beyond pleasantry. Instead of fading into the sunset, though, Taylor reemerged in 1991 with New Moon Shine, his most focused and tuneful release in more than 10 years; the reflective "Copperline" and the frisky "(I've Got to) Stop Thinkin' 'Bout That" would stand out on any of his albums. In "Slap Leather" and "Native Son" he provides affecting and still-relevant takes on the human cost of the first Persian Gulf war.

The Essential James Taylor. Live At The Troubadour. James Taylor At Christmas. Best Of James Taylor. Greatest Hits Volume 2. Hourglass. James Taylor (Best Live).

James Taylor's first Greatest Hits album, released in 1976 and consisting of his well-known early '70s recordings on Warner Bros. and re-recordings of some of the songs from his 1968 Apple Records debut, is in the rarefied sales category of double-digit millions, so a second volume, taking in his tenure at Columbia Records, was a no-brainer. The only wonder is why it took so long. But the second part of Taylor's recording career has been different from his first, especially when it comes to hits.
