I direct the Salt Lake Electric Ensemble, which is currently a group of 10 musicians which each perform and record with Live. We are pleased to announce that our recording of Philip Glass's Music With Changing Parts (1970) has been released on Glass's own record label, Orange Mountain Music. The album was created by first programming each note from the score as MIDI information. Each measure from the score went into one session view clip, and the clips were arranged and distributed to each member of the ensemble. The score was then played entirely in session view, in a top to bottom.

Music with Changing Parts - Salt Lake Electric Ensemble. Title: Glass: Music With Changing Parts. Record Label: Orange Mountain.
Music with Changing Parts marked a turning point in Glass' career, and contains many characteristics of the composer's breakthrough works of the 1970's including Music in 12 Parts and Einstein on the Beach. Icebreaker's performance can be placed firmly placed in the virtuoso chamber tradition established by the original Philip Glass Ensemble. Sample this album Artist (Sample). Music with Changing Parts was, until recently, a piece that many Glass fans may have rather overlooked. Although the Glass completists probably owned the early recording (reissued in the 1990s by Nonesuch) I'd bet it never made it very high in their Play Count. We owe a vote of thanks to Icebreaker from having resurrected this music from the vaults and, in this stunning new recording, for showing it to be the neglected gem it really is.
Philip Glass Composer. Author: Pwyll ap Siôn. GLASS Music with Changing Parts. Music with Changing Parts. Lying between Glass’s early, strict minimalist pieces of the late 1960s (Music in Fifths and Music in Similar Motion) and large-scale compositions of the mid-1970s, such as Music in Twelve Parts, Music With Changing Parts is sometimes viewed as a work in transition. Glass himself was ambivalent, describing it as ‘a little too spacey for my tastes’. This excellent new recording by the Salt Lake Electric Ensemble.
